Are Tungsten Rings Safe?

It is reasonable to ask if tungsten is a safe metal for a wedding ring and if it is wise to wear a ring that cannot be broken. While tungsten is a very durable wedding ring material, it is not durable and can be a perfectly safe choice for your wedding ring.

Tungsten rings are safe and good for use as wedding rings. They are durable and should be immune to rust and corrosion, so one can keep them for years. They are also sturdy and heat-resistant. Tungsten rings are among the most durable of ring metals, but the market for them is filled with fakes.

Contrary to the common belief that tungsten rings cannot be removed from your fingers, for example, when you need to remove them after a hand injury at work, tungsten rings can break as easily as ceramic rings and stones. However, do not apply excessive pressure or use harsh cleaners, because tungsten rings cannot be repolished like rings made of traditional metals such as gold or silver.

Tungsten Retains Its Appearance

Tungsten will not rust or lose its luster, but chlorine bleach and ammonia will damage the surface of the ring. When these chemicals come into contact with tungsten, they can contaminate the surface of the ring.

Tungsten (1960-2450 MPa) Tungsten is one of the hardest metals in nature. Iridium (1670 MPa) Like tungsten, iridium is a chemical element with high density and high temperature resistance. Among all the metals that can be used to make wedding rings, there is one that never loses light, never scratches, never breaks: this metal is tungsten.

In addition, precious metals such as gold and silver are soft and easy to bend or scratch. We have a clear winner in engagement rings: tungsten. Tungsten is hypoallergenic and very suitable for people who are allergic to metal jewelry. Like all alternative metals, tungsten rings are an affordable alternative to precious metal rings.

Tungsten Rings Have a Wide Price Range

You can find high-quality tungsten rings for approximately US$200, while gold and platinum rings range in price from US$500 to US$1,000 or more. Gold is more expensive than tungsten. If you are looking for a ring that will become more valuable over time, gold is also a good choice.

Platinum is not as common as tungsten, which is why platinum rings are much more expensive than tungsten wedding rings. Gold and platinum have real value as metals and go down in history as metals in wedding rings.

When it’s time to buy wedding rings, you and your future spouse want them to be perfect. These are the rings that you will wear for the rest of your life, and there are plenty to choose from. If you buy an elegant ring, you can get it with elements from other metals such as silver, platinum, palladium, rose gold, white gold, and yellow gold with a tungsten center band. They give the tungsten ring a more sophisticated look and even create a great contrast to the timeless luster of tungsten as they wear out over time like regular rings.

The Sturdiness of Tungsten Rings

Due to its sturdy nature, the tungsten ring is difficult to remove in an emergency, especially for those who use traditional wire cutters. This also means that if enough pressure is applied to the surface of the tungsten ring, the tungsten ring will break and cannot be adjusted in size, while the titanium ring will bend like a softer metal.

Both types of rings can of course be removed in an emergency, although the removal technique will be different: the titanium ring needs to be cut with a jewelry saw or the like, and the tungsten carbide ring needs to be clamped off with a vise.

While some higher quality tungsten carbide bands exhibit less fragility, titanium rings are generally even better suited for men who do a lot of hand work. In fact, many experts argue that tungsten rings are safer to wear because they break or crack under a lot of pressure, while other metals, like gold, simply bend around the finger.

Regarding the use of a tungsten ring, according to current research, wearing tungsten does not cause any negative side effects other than the possibility of mild dermatitis due to bound metals in very sensitive people. As mentioned earlier, in some people, dermatitis can occur due to skin contact with tungsten in general, primarily due to working with tungsten carbide, rather than simply wearing a ring.

This is important because if you are allergic to some metals (mainly nickel) that some tungsten carbide rings may contain, you may (if unlikely) have an allergic reaction to these tungsten carbide rings. However, if you are allergic to metals such as nickel and cobalt, wearing a tungsten ring containing these additional metals can cause allergic symptoms.

Beware of Fake Tungsten Rings

Sometimes sellers use expensive filler instead of tungsten, which reduces the cost and integrity of the ring. If the tungsten ring has a flexible metal insert, then both methods of removal will have to be used: first crush the tungsten and then cut the precious metal insert.

Interestingly, while some people think tungsten is dangerous to wear because of this difficult-to-machine feature, in fact, metals like titanium or cobalt take much longer to remove, making them more dangerous. As one of the hardest materials, tungsten is scratch resistant and will not wear out even after many years. Due to the hardness of this metal, a tungsten wedding band is scratch-resistant and does not bend as easily as other precious or alternative metals. The great thing about tungsten wedding rings is that you can now work in peace without worrying about wear or any other damage to the ring.

Tungsten as a Wedding Band Metal

Those who love modern wedding bands can also choose tungsten jewelry from a wider range of styles. More affordable than gold or silver rings, titanium and tungsten wedding bands are also available in a wider range of styles.

The most commonly used grades of titanium for jewelry (flat, superhard and pure commercial) are composed of titanium with a purity of at least 85%. The products made from tungsten carbide are mainly sintered powders, that is, cobalt powder and a small amount of other alloy powder materials mixed with tungsten carbide powder.

Tungsten is a very hard metal, and the forces between atoms are much stronger. Although tungsten does not bend under impact like some softer metals, it will decompose under sufficient pressure. But tungsten is weaker—it’s a brittle metal that is known to shatter on impact. In terms of tensile strength, tungsten is the strongest among all natural metals (142,000 psi).

However, it is also a brittle metal and the tungsten ring can break with a good impact. Perhaps the biggest myth is that tungsten, in particular, can be quite brittle and easily scratched on its own, so it’s useless as a metal for a ring. While it is true that 100% tungsten jewelry will be fragile and relatively easy to damage, those who propagandize this myth are usually unaware that tungsten rings are actually an alloy of tungsten carbide.

Scratch Resistance – Due to its hardness, tungsten carbide easily outperforms titanium in scratch resistance, although titanium is still significantly more scratch resistant than other popular materials.
